London sound artist Luke Younger Helm expands the sound palette of his Helm project on his fourth release for Bill Kouligas’ PAN imprint: taking influence from dub techno and balearic disco, he has created an LP of wide reaching loop-based sonic excursions. As you’d expect, these inspirations find their way into Younger’s sound in a more abstract sense: Olympic Mess feels like Younger’s most structured work to date, the loops offering a framework in which his array of heavily processed samples, field recordings and electroacoustics takes full effect. Within these structures, he combines techniques of condensing and transforming his sounds, appropriating the connotations of ambient and noise, adding gravitating layers, building crescendos and playing with dynamics, resolving the roughened textures in gentle bliss.
