German-born British composer Max Richter sees his captivating 2003 LP The Blue Notebooks treated to a deluxe vinyl reissue courteous of respected German classical imprint Deutsche Grammophon. Originally released on Fatcat Records offshoot 130701, The Blue Notebooks was Richter’s second full-length release and is a timeless, sophisticated and adventurous collection of modern classical music, focusing mainly on the piano, highlighted by passages of spoken word. Opening up a with delicate piano keys providing a base for a deep, existentialist Kafka monologue, the heart wrenching strings of ‘On The Nature Of Daylight’ follow; whilst ‘Shadow Journal’ carries traces of mystery with its heavily textured approach. ‘Old Song’ peels things back to distant piano tinkering, set against a clattering typewriter and more spoken dialogue, pursued by the stirring orchestral ensemble ‘The Trees’ and the final, minimalistic ivory touches on ‘Written On The Sky’ that round off a profound work of unerring grace.
