Experimental jazz electronic trio Dawn Of Midi pull back the clouds and lay bare Dysnomia for the ever crucial Erased Tapes imprint. With a sound rooted in improvisation and freeform construction, Brooklyn-based neo-classical outfit Dawn Of Midi opt for a more measured and pre-planned approach to their sound. Across the nine tracks found within Dysnomia the trio envision a heady blend of hypnotic percussive pieces that brim with subtle repetition and while it may have its roots in jazz, the production is that of many skilled hands working in perfect conjunction with each other blending wooded instruments with piano keys falling in between the cracks like rain. Opening piece Io starts off with carefully plucked strings before building into a tired eyes drooping cycle with more layers carefully laid over the top with startling accuracy, Sinope introduces subtle drums to the mix while Atlas continues the trend but with a darker feel. Things go almost proto-house on Ymir but the sounds never stray too far from the modern classical ambience that cloaks each piece's performance. This is truly minimalist music in the continuum laid out by Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass but updated with pallet of sound and rhythm that could only be produced by ears that have absorbed all the different sounds that have brought us into 2015 with music of vast genres being widely readily available. For us Dysnomia eclipses all the other releases on the electronica ambient jazz horizon this year with its undying pulse and groove which carries throughout the album and stands as a testament to the power of preparation.
