On this latest compilation for David Holmes’ Belfast imprint Touch Sensitive, NTS resident and producer Gareth Goddard, better known as Cherrystones, once again exercises his curatorial talent. Selecting his favourites from the subversive musical period of 1978-1984, Goddard uncovers somewhat overlooked treasures from the realm of new wave, post punk and industrial. It’s not like there was any doubt left — but hearing Rheingold’s Neue Deutsche Welle next to the peculiar saxophone sounds of Belgian avant-rock band Aksak Maboul and the slapping bass of long-forgotten Dutch group Dojoji all the more illustrates the richness of the musical underground at the time, aloof from the well-trod narratives.
