A delightful surprise collaboration record, brought to us by Bill Kouligas and his always on point Berlin/New York imprint PAN. The core of the undertaking are Future Times co-founder Andrew Field-Pickering and Baltimore’s Matthew Papich. Field-Pickering appears under his Max D alias and contributes an abstracted idea of the busy house rhythm knots he’s showcased on works such as 2015’s Shaping EP (Off Minor); Papich alias Co La accounts for the cosmic beatscapes we’ve fallen in love with on his 2013 album on Software Recordings. Later, they invited Juju & Jordash’s Jordan GCZ and ambient producer Gigi Masin to send their overdubs from their studios in Amsterdam and Venice, and added synthesis and percussion from Motion Graphics, 1432 R co-founder Dawit Eklund and Jeremy Hyman to become the globalised, multi-referential project they call Lifted. Though the producers are said to have worked outside the frameworks that constitute their solo outputs, the respective elements of their styles are detectable on this explorative journey. It’s within the fusion of hectic percussion blobs and ambient synths, jazzy hi-hats, the dynamic piano chords and field recordings of ‘Silver’ for example or the otherworldly sound effects of ‘Total Care Zero’ that their permeable arrangements come to its unlikely fruition.
