March of 2014 saw James Holden and Floating Points travel to the Fellah Hotel near Marrakech at the request of Maalem (Master) Mahmoud Guinia from Morocco’s Gnawa musical heritage. Along with Guinia’s band, the newly formed collaborative outfit crafted 4 songs next to the hotel pool for this release on Points’ Eglo imprint. While all verbal communication happened through a translator, the finished product is a cultural exchange like no other; looping percussion in keeping with the Gnawa way, the distinctive vocals of Maalem and an execution and compositional vision that could only have come from Holden and Floating Points. A one-off collaboration giving way to a truly singular release.
