Omar S opens up his prestigious FHXE imprint to 21-year-old artist John F.M for his debut EP Where My Roots Lie. From the first beat of the opening piece ‘Where My Roots Lie (A New Detroit Anthem)’, we know we’re in for something special, with the young producer bridging deep brain-warping synth textures to a bold drum suite that’s closer to the Chicago sound. Although, the following cut ‘White Churches Be Like’ is unmistakeably Detroit, with its sturdy, working groove accompanied by phasered 1/16 clicks that sound straight out of Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir’s playbook, whereas ‘Solace’ flips it up completely for a soulful slice of hazy, late night R&B.
