Coming out on his own 2026 imprint, experimental composer William Basinski releases this piano-based ambient piece inspired tape-loop which lasts the whole 40 minutes. The ghostly and vacant sounding composition showcases Basinski’s commitment to the phantasmal capabilities of repetition and adaptation as a format. What starts as a gentle piano loop becomes the nucleus for a soaring piece of neo-classical composition. Through warping and reshaping the loop, Basinski holds the listener’s attention for the best part of an hour and creates an opus of sorts all stemming from one simple melody.
