Unloading a clip of potent snapshots, YHWH Nailgun follow up their rawer than raw debut LP 45 Pounds with a move from AD 93 to 4AD and a total whittling of their sound on Magazine. Creaking, howling, feedback, distortion, raspy vocals, and engine revving bass are compacted into high octane momentary eruptions of colour. While some tracks race through traces of song structure, most are eager to disappear into cannibalistic shuffles and grinding steel. Magazine explores sound in short blasts, evident in the pointillism of tracks like ‘Ballerina’, its guitar stabs and pinching drums interstitched with locust swarms of percussion.
