Australian art rock duo Dead Can Dance are being treated to a crucial reissue series, with their long time label home 4AD repressing three of their most important works. Among them is Into The Labyrinth, their sixth and one of their most successful albums, released in 1995. It documents the artist's individual songwriting styles, with Lisa Gerrard having relocated to Australia and Brendan Perry living on an island in an Irish river. Recorded in Perry’s studio in Ireland, the duo for the first time played all the instruments themselves. Foregrounding ethnic influences from all over the world that would come to define their later work, the indigenous Australien spirit dance ‘Yulunga’ sets the scene, while Gerrard takes us to a different continent with her a-capella Irish folk ballad ’The Wind That Shakes The Barley’. The album bursts references to Greek mythology too (‘Ariadne’, ‘Emmeleia’), and includes words by Bertolt Brecht (‘How Fortunate The Man With None’).
