One of Susumu Yokota’s more elusive albums in both sound and distribution, Laputa finally receives a global release through Lo Recordings’ ambitious Skintone Edition series. Samples are refracted through impossible architectures as Laputa floats above structure, gluing together almost opposing sound sources until the seams are imperceptible. The murky alien jungle and distorted choral keys of ‘Rising Sun’ introduce us to unstable transforming soundscapes, glistening with glossy guitar plucks that signalling the Sun illuminating this strange land, a shivering showcase of the sonic possibilities that Yokota discovered on his Skintone label.
