Jochem Paap was in no rush to release a solo studio album in the twenty four years since his last Speedy J record Loudboxer, and his sixth album reflects this relaxed pace. Walkman is designed to soundtrack a full journey played on its titular tech, allowing segments to take the form of amorphous soundscapes rather than clearly delineated tracks or songs. Scattered fragments of sound dramatically shift the tone of the listener’s travels, from the classic drum machines of Speedy J’s 90s run to breakbeats clattering with pneumatic, high speed carnage, and synths contorted in hyper liquid sound design.
