Over the past decade, Nozinja has successfully made the move from mobile phone repair tycoon in the Soweto region of South Africa to global ambassador and icon of Shangaan electro. The sound he has come to spearhead and define is a revamped and sped up version of traditional music from the Shangaan nation. Nozinja’s electronicised remodel is one that reaches the dizzying heights of 180BPM with little in the way of bass. Cuts like 'Nyamsoro' and 'Vatswelani' are led by the marimba, the Tsonga-speaking vocal samples and the sheer pandemonium of the Shangaan electro sound. The music is born out of a unique dance performed by fans in the Limpopo province of South Africa- a wildly kinetic energy exercised in the legs and waist. This debut LP for Warp is an introduction in to that unique and delighting universe.
