Hackney multi-instrumentalist Sam Sharp inaugurates his new Boot Cycle Audio imprint with an EP of fresh material under his Lossy disguise. The label will be an outlet for the more experimental and electronic side of his creative work, and his River Solos EP — inspired by London’s waterways and created as solo pieces on the Korg Volca Keys — feels like it’s in good hands. The thick bass part of ‘River Thames’ mimics its majestic course, its broken chords the dancing light reflexes on its surface. ‘River Neckinger’, a significantly smaller river that runs through Elephant & Castle and joins the Thames via St. Saviour's Docks, finds its sonic expression in a slow, but steady pattern over subtly floating high-frequency drones, whereas ‘Regents Canal’ comprises airier staccato notes and ‘River Lea’ applies a Bach-esque contrapuntal motion.
