Having already turned in collaborations with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (Marz Volta) and Venetian Snares (as well as putting in time as one quarter of Red Hot Chilli Peppers), multi-instrumentalist John Frusciante returns under his new Trickfinger for this 8-track full length of acid-indebted electronica. Joining the likes of Recondite and Paul Woolford on the shelves of Absurd Records offshoot Acid Test, Trickfinger’s eponymous debut is a concise exploration into hardware based acid and IDM. There are more universal cuts like Phurip and 85h which wouldn’t sound out of place in the depths of an epic set from Klock or Dettman. On top of these, there are bonafide acid workouts like 4:30 and Sain where writhing synths and modular contractions pull together for a truly beguiling sound. Even if this project is nothing but a hobby, it is a sideline worth listening to.
