On their fifth studio album, Canadian post-rock gods Godspeed You! Black Emperor prove that they’re very much capable of conciseness. The four track outing - their first since 2012's Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! - clocks in at just over 40 minutes which makes it one of their shortest to date, yet doesn’t take away anything from their sound’s immersive power. The opener shows their grand striding guitar riffs with almost symphonic qualities as they keep on progressing to melodic high points, whereas ‘Lambs’ Breath’ anchors the record in a decent, but equally hypnotic drone sound, starring ever-unfolding oscillating overtones. ‘Asunder, Sweet’ marks the point of resurrection before the thunderstorm final of crescendo rolling drums and liberated guitar chords - catharsis complete!
