The midpoint of Alva Noto’s essential Xerrox pentalogy is where Carsten Nicolai’s production philosophy really begins to shift, a fusion between the series’ turbulent glitchy beginning and its orchestral introspective end. Through copying nonexistent references and distant memories of film scores, Vol.3 creates tense and reverent scenes, where trickling motes of dust become laser bursts and prickly strings, and distortion sears through soft melodies. Among ghostly layers of flickering sonic debris, whistling signals and smooth walls of drones wash, and the spare piano notes of ‘Xerrox Spiegel’ colour this internal landscape.
