Following 2014’s self-titled EP for Will Saul’s and Fink’s Aus Music, Scottish producer Ewan Smith resurfaces on the label as Youandewan. Spiral Arms continues in the warm hardware style of its predecessor. The funky, heavy weight bass of ‘Isabel’ accounts for absolute vibes. Softly floating synth pads contrast with muffled kicks and claps (’Stak Poly Looms’) and bizarrely cause the acid theme of ‘Fool Be Cool’ to have calming effects. Créme Organization and Dixon Avenue Basement Jams affiliate Marquis Hawkes represents an apt choice for a remixer. He removes the squelching 303 sounds of the original in favour of a percussion heavy framework, foregrounding the passionate vocal sample.
