Aeonflower is the new album of cinematic electronics from East London-based artist Paper Dollhouse aka Astrud Steehouder & Nina Bosnic. The pair have been busy writing and recording in various different groups and projects since the release of the inner-city ambience of low-fi debut 'A Box Painted Black', released by Andy Votel and Jane Weaver's Bird imprint a few years back. The pair have also released a split cassette on the Folklore Tapes imprint with fellow Bird artist Magpai. Aside from this they have been busy following solo endeavours, Astrud recently collaborated with Frozen Border artists Joe Cocherell & AnD for a psychedelic techno 12" on the PDH associated Resilience label while Nina has been performing and writing with her other group; the Alter-signed industrial electronics of Liberez. Aeonflower showcases a darker side to the pair, one that has been ever-present in their various incarnations but until now has not reared its head. Opening with the Mala Morska Vila-style deep sea organ of 'Oracle' before plunging into the forgotten dusty ambience of 'Stand' that could be a British answer to Tropic Of Cancer's haunted heartbreak. They dabble in fierce bass-heavy low-slung techno on 'Helios' and late night dubbed-out noise excursions with 'Psyche' while the traces of early avant-garde and industrial folk are strong on LP highlight 'In The Sun' they revisit the bubblegum pop they recorded for Brighton's Outer Church label a few years ago with the glacial post-punk of 'Your Heart' all executed with a care and intensity of two people completely in tune with each other and their instruments. A haunting soundtrack to the end of winter months of present, mixing equal influence from Nico's Marble Index, the deserted desert rock 'n' roll of DVA Damas, and the Berlin-bound icy techno of the Frozen Border imprint. An introspective LP with ever-present dark side roads all joined together to form a frightening, stark, dislocating landscape.
