Genres
Between 2004 and 2010, Hisham Mayet, North African musical guru and founder of the Sublime Frequencies label, undertook six separate expeditions to the Republic of Niger. This lavish double-album, complete with 25 page booklet, collects Mayet’s field recordings from those expeditions, showcasing the dazzling range, power and deep spirituality of traditional Nigerien folk music. Including stream-of-consciousness griot ‘news broadcasts’, a cappella drone chants and even music from a spirit possession ceremony, this immersive collection stands testament to a culture which is not just augmented by music, but for which music is an absolutely essential component of every aspect of life.
