Ryuichi Sakamoto’s final performance is a poignant exploration of works from across his career. Directed by his son Neo Sora, the concert film OPUS is a bid to give his long love affair with the piano an emotive conclusion through minimal, patient pieces where pedals and hammers softly erupt and every note and rest is deeply evocative. Ever hungry and restless to explore new possibilities, Sakamoto played unreleased tracks and new arrangements alongside his most legendary compositions, from the slow, tender waltz of ‘Lack of Love’ filling out with reverent grandeur to the glistening, buzzing, ricocheting chords of ‘20180219’.
