Folklore Tapes inaugurate the Cheshire Folklore Tapes imprint with the first in a series of spoken word flexi-disc (remember them?) releases. Label head David Chatton-Barker travelled to the hills and caves of Alderley Edge near Manchester with Carl Turney & Brian Campbell of the Lost Tapes Record club label and Liverpudlian post-punk outfit Clinic. The aim was to record the ambience of the area famed for its local history from the legend of the Wizard of the Edge through to the deep recesses of the devils cave. The outcome is a wonderfully entrancing recording of forest found sounds, stone wall ambience and psychedelic grass roots folk with tales of magic on one side and topography on the flip narrated by locals from the area. All lovingly housed inside a hand-made booklet, at times recalling Mordant Music & Chris Petit's 'Museum Of Loneliness' LP or the home-grown experimentation of 'Flaming Tunes' this release sheds light on an important part of Northern England's rich folklore tapestry but leaves you asking questions that may never be answered.
