Dutch and LA-based synth playboy Kai Hugo resurfaces with his new solo project Palmbomen II. His self-titled album arrives on the label of Beats In Space radio show operator Tim Sweeney, by courtesy of RVNG Intl. Recorded in his mother’s attic in their hometown of Breda, the classic sequencers and an actual TR-909 drench the summery colours and nature samples of his melodious deep house productions in a golden vintage filter. With the titles referencing characters from the 90s American sci-fi show The X-Files, the album has nostalgia written all over it. But the saturated lo-fi vibe fits in really well with contemporary philosophies of production, and effects such as Hugo’s real-time pitch-bending create the all-important notion of immediacy.
