Jodey Kendrick drops his highly anticipated new LP on WeMe, using his J.K. alias as an outlet for a distinctly darker vibe than that of his previous releases for Rephlex. Jodey himself describes this slight departure as “down tempo angry with breaks and sub bass and field recordings”, but that brief summary doesn’t do justice to what is a complex and subtle record. The sliced and diced acoustic drum samples which make up the trip-hop breaks come over like Photek in slo-mo – downbeat but no less aggressive for it – while the carefully layered found-sounds lend the whole record a distinct and unsettling atmosphere. J.K. claims he was angry when he made this – let’s hope he doesn’t calm down any time soon.
