Following the truly jaw dropping Bee Mark reworks from 2013, Italian musician Donato Dozzy is back on Spectrum Spools to charter some highly experimental and previously unchartered territory in collaboration with Rome based vocalist Anna Caragnano. Here, Dozzy ditches his usual analogue synthesizer and reduces his sonic palette to just the alluring vocals of Caragnano together with a range of effects, and its staggering how far he’s able to make it stretch. Through genius use of layering and processing, the style shifts from operatic new-age ambience (‘Starcloud’); through to the soulful swell of ‘Luci’ and the hair-raising Reichian gust of ‘Fraledune’. ‘Parola’ shows off the artist’s understanding of complex, hypnotic rhythm, with the shifting Italian vocals conjuring a mesmeric dervish, pursued by the similarly dizzying ‘Festa (A Mottola)’. Finally, the rhythmic pitter-patter of ‘Conclusione’ puts the finishing touches on a spell binding release from an artist who continually forces himself to push the boundaries.
