Girl Unit makes a welcome return under the Hysterics alias for Night Slugs, four tracks aimed straight at the dancefloor. Philip Gamble debuted this alternate identity in 2013 with an EP that seemed to explore the more apocalyptic realms of contemporary club music. This EP continues that voyage, opening with the hazy mutated rhythms of Club Life and then arriving at HTRX9 which harbours a beat that sounds like it’s gasping for breathe. This is relentless club music but club music all the same. The more welcoming tones of Empty showcase the softer side to Hysterics and reiterate Gamble’s unique skill as a producer- an understanding of dance music that allows him to lacerate it then piece it back together.
