Arriving in the wake of their recent ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ cover, Ry Cuming and Frank Wiedemann – renaming their project Howling to mirror the title of their debut single – are back on Monkeytown with brand new track ‘Signs’. As is becoming the pair’s trademark, ‘Signs’ begins with as a work of confessional intimacy, the close mic vocals reminiscent of James Blake at his most introspective. A sure-footed house pulse drops just before the halfway mark, but the arrangement remains sparse, with minor key piano chords gently augmenting Cuming’s hypnotic vocal. In a display of masterful restraint, it’s not until the second chorus that the bass-line emerges in earnest and the track really hits its stride, before drifting back into piano led reverie.
