One of three seminal Brian Jonestown Massacre albums to be given a 2015 vinyl reissue on Anton Newcombe’s own A Records, 1995’s Methodrone eschews the psychedelic folk and R&B influences of other Brian Jonestown Massacre releases for a sound that is rooted firmly in the mid-nineties shoegaze scene the band inhabited with contemporaries such as Ride, Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine. The wistful lilt of Newcombe’s trademark vocal is carried on wave after wave of blissed-out reverb and layered guitar noise to create a record which is an exemplar of its era but which still stands up to scrutiny on the twentieth anniversary of its original release.
