With his latest signing for his Other People imprint, Nicolas Jaar ventures a step further into the exciting abstract corners of electronic music. John Bence, a 19-year-old artist from the UK, fuses classical composition with electronic production approaches: his debut release, Disquiet, is a three part suite of female choirs, wailing strings and subtle synth drones, scored, recorded, re-recorded, manipulated and re-scored again. As the silky voices are floating around, their polyphony becomes the harbinger of the cello’s textural depth - Bence displays an astonishing sense of dynamics and dramaturgy, both in terms of arrangement and structural diversity.
