The Late Night Tales series has become a wonderful place for producers to map their taste, and Danish producer Trentemøller broadens our musical horizon taking over its 25th instalment. The obvious thread of the mix are its dark colours: Trentemøller largely stays away from the electronica that constitutes his own productions, and instead presents a mainly downtempo collection of songwriter rock and psychedelic twists, summed up in his doomed rework of Chris Isaack’s Blue Hotel, exclusively recorded for the series. Contributions such as hippie prophet Eden Ahbez’ spoken word recital and his choice of British journalist Paul Morley for the tales outro uncover the nature of the mix, it’s about aligning personal taste with a convincing narrative, something Trentemøller has surely achieved here.
