Giegling associate Vril unleashed his second full-length release with the Portal LP on Delsin Records. It’s a fitting name for a producer so adept in creating captivating, dub-rich macrocosms, transcending the listener into a world with precious detailing and brut strength in equal measure. Across the eight pieces, there’s little in the way of narrative, yet the sheer depth, weight and metallic taste of the pieces are instantly recognisable as Vril. Opener ‘Portal 1’ draws us in with its slightly offbeat, captivating oscillations whilst the throbbing, muscled constructions of ‘Portal 2’ and ‘Portal 3’ keep their sights locked firmly on the ‘floor. The ecstatic, icy ‘Portal 7’ builds and builds, drawing everything into its path like a vacuum, whereas final cut ‘Portal 8’ signs off with a beatless expanse of cauterizing synth lashings.
