Canadian producers Rich Oddie and David Foster make their debut as a duo on Opal Tapes. With both of them having a long-standing history in the noisier corners of techno, Oddie as half of seminal industrial techno outfit Orphx, and Foster’s involvement in the no less influential Teste collaboration, it’s surprising their musical paths should only cross now. That their first joint studio effort, however, comes as a match made in power electronics heaven, is no surprise. Foster’s heavily distorted spoken word vocals rasp aggressively against Oddie’s dense percussive structures. Acting under the moniker Ontario Hospital, the duo created the album improvising on the Korg MS-20 and Roland 808, with the result of their two main ingredients – skeletal techno and well dosed noise – standing out distinctively against the mix.
