Pitchfork’s twelfth-best album of 2001 gets a vinyl reissue via Domino. Idiology was Mouse On Mars’s seventh LP, and the German duo found the sweet-spot in channelling almost a decade of chemistry and knowhow while not losing sight of the inventive playfulness that made them unique. Opening track and lead single ‘Actionist Respoke’ channels Aphex Twin’s ‘Windowlicker’ in both sound and style; ‘Subsequence’ mixes the groovy electronica of Moby with intense orchestration; ‘Catching Butterflies With Hands’ is strange and strangely affecting computer love music. Idiology prefaces the work of acts like Modeselektor while also staying in its own lane. With a new MOM LP due later in 2018, now would be a fine time to reacquaint yourself with the group.
