Sunn O))) is heaviness personified, an elementary force that arises from the confluence of Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson. Thus, the eponymous nature of their tenth album goes beyond just titling: it’s a sign of the pure power of the band’s core duo. Time and space stretch and shrink across their dense thickets of guitars, building immense soundscapes that are obliterated into an all consuming throb representative of the natural world that surrounded the album’s recording process. After over an hour of harmonic harrow, scorched stutter, and full throttle drone, piano trickles in to calm this active, turbulent landscape, reducing guttural drones to echoes before renewing them with melodic vigour.
