Foom presents us with a captivating release from two heavyweights of American contemporary music, with composing trombonist Peter Zummo and the late, great cellist / vocalist Arthur Russell. Originally commissioned in 1985 for Trisha Brown’s contemporary dance piece of the same name, Lateral Pass’ main highlight is the 15-minute epic ‘Song IV (Quintet)’, where Zummo’s smudged trombone toots effortlessly glided between Russell’s unique unobtrusive vocals, together with Guy Klucevsek’s tasteful accordion and the hypnotic tabla beat providing the percussive backbone. It's a piece that ebbs and flows with such composure you never want it to end. Also included are three equally mesmeric pieces that have never appeared on vinyl, such as the spine-tingling cello piece ‘Sci-Fi’, the starker ‘Slow Heart’ and the more boisterous, enraptured ‘Song VI’.
