Scottish newcomer Cain drops the second in a trilogy of releases leading up to his debut album on Fine Grain Records. Following his Mora EP, Savan is conceptualised around traditional music from India and includes two excellent remixes from no less than grime champ Slackk and Hyperdub affiliate Morgan Zarate. ‘Indra’ fuses melismatic Hindustani vocals and tabla drums with chirruping synths. It’s the bass that earths these Indian elements throughout the EP. Morgan Zarate churns the ingredients with reverberant claps and gun shot style rhythms in his grime rework of ‘Nagan’; and Slackk deconstructs the straightforward beat of ‘Andale’, condensing its high-frequency layers.
