XL Recordings marks 10 years of King Krule’s landmark sophomore album A New Place 2 Drown with a new companion LP of instrumental versions. Issued under his own name Archy Marshall, A New Place was something of a departure from the sparse electric folk/post-punk/DIY sound of his auspicious debut. Pulling in spoken word poetry, hip hop beats, and seedy electronica, it was seen then as something more akin to a mixtape of the young UK songwriter’s increasingly explorative tastes. Even when stripped of his bellowing vocals, these tracks still offer an exhilarating road map to one of indie rock’s most captivatingly singular voices.
