New York rap royalty De La Soul return to Mass Appeal after a robust reissue series for their first new LP in many years with Cabin In The Sky. Written in tribute to their fallen brother Dave “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur as well as all the friends and family lost along the way, Cabin In The Sky naturally finds De La in a more pensive and reflective lyrical mood. And yet there’s palpable joy in the mix too, especially when old friends like Common and Slick Rick slide into frame to throw a party in their honor. All these years on it’s still such a treat to hear those classic flows over beats that blend soul, jazz, and funk into something else altogether.
