Warp Films and Film4 present ’71- the story of a young British soldier stranded in Belfast during the height of the troubles. Director Yann Demange and composer David Holmes thought the best way to score the picture would be for Holmes to create the bulk of the soundtrack before a single frame had even been shot. The music would be recorded then edited to fit the film at a later date. Having lived in Belfast all his life, Holmes paired real life experience with cinematic inspirations like John Carpenter and Tony Conrad to sonically capture a 1970s Belfast on the brink of turmoil.
