Sleaford Mods have kept a steady clip of releases ever since starting in 2007, and on The Demise of Planet X they cast a wide net with their most collaborative album yet. Sparse drum machine rhythms give space for unrepentant lyrics to go wild, immediately evident on the opening ‘The Good Life’ where urgently punching beats and a rumbling bass buzz set the scene for an expressively scathing surprise verse from Gwendoline Christie (yes, you read that right!). Elsewhere the slackened rhythms and bold piano chords of ‘Double Diamond’ point towards hip hop’s golden age, while guttural bass scrubs and revolving grime beats soundtrack iconoclasm and unease on ‘Kill List’.
