Perfume Genius, the ambitious pop project of Seattle singer/songwriter Mike Hadreas, returns with album number three, the aching, awe-inspiring Too Bright. Musically, Hadreas has outdone himself, thanks in part to co-producer Adrian Utley of Portishead. Lead single ‘Queen’ balances crisp, anthemic drum work with psychedelic synths, while ‘Grid’ pulses with primitive electronics and guitar feedback. Thankfully, Hadreas does not completely forsake the traditional piano ballad, returning to his format of choice on heartbreakers ‘No Good’ and ‘Don’t Let Them In’.
