To celebrate 20 years since establishing his influential M-Plant label, Detroit techno veteran Robert Hood has rereleased a number of the label’s earliest records. Protein Valve, M-Plant’s debut release back in 1994, served as Hood’s statement of intent: its stark but hypnotic minimalism defining the label’s aesthetic for many releases to come. ‘Protein Valve 1’ is typical of this approach: its looping synth stabs subtly metamorphose over the course of the track, backed by blistering percussion.
