Almost 50 years since its premiere, Einstein on the Beach has undergone many permutations, and Philip Glass’s seminal score for the opera is magically interpreted by Ictus and Collegium Vocale Gent alongside Suzanne Vega’s clear voiced dramatic declarations. Cosmic arrangements of synth, sax, and singing expand and contract with joyful exploration of the titular figure, bracketed by hypnotic ‘Knee’ plays where streams of primal drones and rapidly counting harmonies converge. Among dizzying flurries of flutes are the melodic, programmatic arrangements of vocals, low woodwinds, mallets, and steam roars on ‘Night Train’, and the pirouetting orchestrations of ‘Dance 2’ anchored by deep synth bass hums.
