Contact Field Orchestra provide their follow-up to their well-received self-titled debut LP with another extensive collection of field recordings-heavy, contemplative pieces encased as Vol. 2. Things get underway with the Francis Bebey-styled thumb piano motif of ‘Box Canyon Waterfall’, then moving into ‘In The Dungeon’ where a low-slung hip-hop bounce is introduced with subtle electronic touches. From here, the collection shifts between moments of early African field recordings with ‘Hawks & Eagles’, ‘Tres Fleurs’ and ‘On The Mountain’ to more bluesy guitar samples such as ‘Outsider’ and ‘Blues Fo CFO’. Despite these seemingly disparate themes, Vol.2 has a very definite, meditative mood threaded through each of the pieces, taking on a greater meaning when experienced as a whole.
