Dixon Avenue Basement Jams regular Marquis Hawkes makes his debut on Fabric’s ever-expanding label arm Houndstooth with the Fifty Fathoms Deep EP. Here, Hawkes flaunts the various avenues of his sound, all underpinned by some classic house jack with opening cut ‘Can’t Find A Reason’ kicking hard with its jacking percussion and soulful R&B licks destined to set the floor alight. The dubbed-out swing of ‘The Way’ feels like something that would easily slot into a Rick Wilhite or Theo Parrish set whereas ‘Fifty Fathoms’ is all sunken garage swagger with the softest tinsel-like hi-hats. Finally, ‘Fat Man’ offers a taste of the old school with its grainy string stabs and retro vocal feature.
