After winning the 2012 Mercury Music Prize with the mathy pop of their debut, An Awesome Wave, alt-J return with this inventive and equally catchy follow-up. ‘Hunger of The Pine’ suggests anything but a band playing it safe, merging saxophone, pulsating electronics and a Miley Cyrus sample into one of their most ingenious and, surprisingly successful, tracks to date. For much of the album the band’s focus remains on carefully crafted melodies with an eye for detail. That knack for creating complex song structures is evident on the album’s other highlight, ‘Every Other Freckle’, with its densely layered rhythms.
