An incredible retrospective and introduction to the music and politics of drummer and anti-apartheid activist Julian Bahula from Strut records. The first disc, traces the evolution of the Malombo sound with Bahula beginning to experiment with incorporating African percussion into jazz. That’s particularly apparent on the polyrhythms of ‘Abbey's Mood' played by Bahula on hand drums. During the period covered by the second disc Bahula was in exile in Europe, broadening out his sound with additional brass instrumentation as well as soul and funk influences.
