Celebrating the revolutionary sound engineer Daphne Oram’s centenary, Nonclassical have pulled together an astounding mix of artists to reshape sounds from her archives on vari/ations. Herself a pioneer, Cosey Fanni Tutti taps into the primordial potential of electronics with a guttural yet patient soundscape, introducing a cornucopian tracklist of contorted club from TAAHLIAH and Deena Abdelwahed, shimmering memories from Magz Hall & Mieko Shimizu and resonant ambience from the UK’s premier engineer Marta Salogni, and strings unravelling like tape bracketed by vocal wonder from afromerm & abi asisa. This isn’t just an album boasting variety, these artists are living evidence of the breadth of people and styles that Oram and the women of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop have inspired.
