Two thirds of masterful post-rock trio Labradford reform as Anjou and release their debut, courtesy of Kranky. Bassist Robert Donne and guitarist Mark Nelson, along with percussionist and frequent collaborator Steven Hess, pick up where their former group left off in 2001, crafting brilliant sound sketches that drift between ambient expeditions and moody jams. ‘Sighting’ opens in a fog of hissing electronics and resonant tones before Hess cuts through with a melancholy, Talk Talk-esque drum beat. The gorgeous ‘Readings’ subs drones for shimmering synths, the drummer upping the intensity, while the moonlit vibes and sub-bass rumble of of ‘Backsight’ border on minimal techno.
