South London based instrumental hip-hop producer Paul White sidesteps his usual One-Handed Music imprint to release his fourth LP Shaker Notes on long-standing Belgian imprint R&S Records. This time around the Londoner ditches his sampling equipment and turns multi-instrumentalist, crafting a multi-referencing, wide-screen sound from a range of exotic elements. Following on from the dizzying ‘Intro’, ‘All We Know’ sets us into a plush, dub-rich African groove tainted with a smoky future jazz haze whereas ‘Where You Gonna Go’ and ‘Honey Cats’ offer a more pensive mood. On ‘Fighting To Dance’, White flips into primordial voodoo territory with a sustained percussive bass proving a solid base for a soulful sax; ’10 Numbers Of Change’ follows suit albeit with a greater emphasis on the exuberant electronics. The release isn’t without its softer sides however, with the pastel colours of ‘Running On A Rainy Day’ merging for an achingly beautiful piece of downtempo and final introverted moments on closer ‘Shaker Notes’ with its distant drumming and soft, meandering flute.
